“To a Special Dog: Happy Valentine’s Day”

Lizzy is an animal lover.  Hardcore.  She adores her animals (cat, dog, and guinea pig), and those that share the homes of her loved ones.  She can be a bit timid when approaching a strange dog, she’s like me that way.

We decided to share some of the 5 billion “milk bones” we picked up at Costco last week with some of the doggies in our lives.

We whipped up a simple tag, inspired by Amanda’s Valentine printables that she shared this week.

I have learned throughout the years that nothing pleases family and friends more than kiddo handmade goodness.  So Lizzy went about making the tags for these Valentines.  She made a few varieties, and I made several copies.

Fold, staple, staple, DONE!

Cute, quick and cheap.

Happy Valentine’s Day to your “Special Dog”!

Brown Sugar Shortbread Cookies for Valentines

This recipe, and the countless memories associated with it come straight from page 26, REDBOOK March 1989.

This page has a rather peculiar patina that can only be achieved by careless handling with butter, flour and brown sugar-coated fingers.  It is one of my most cherished possessions.

This recipe (baked countless times by my mother and myself in my teen-age years) is titled, “Lee Bailey’s Brown Sugar Shortbread”.   We made it often, because we always had the ingredients on hand.  Ms. Bailey’s recipe calls for pecans, but since we rarely had those, they were easily omitted. (Although, honey we do so love our pecan pie).  It requires nothing more than butter, brown sugar, flour and vanilla.

In a bowl, mix:

2/3 Cup softened butter

1/2 Cup brown sugar

1 tsp vanilla

1 1/2 cups flour

Mix until well combined.

Press in a WELL buttered: cake pan or shortbread mold.

I used a Wilton Valentine Cookie Pan

Flour your hands and pat the dough into the pan or mold.  Randomly pierce the top with a fork.

Bake in a preheated 325 degree oven.  Now if you are using a cake pan, it will take longer (say 30 min.)  But with the mold I used, I took about 12-15 minutes.  They will puff up a bit, and turn golden around the edges when they are ready.

These smell so good.  Simple love from the oven!

This Valentine is for you, Mom!  Remembering all those late night cookie cravings we shared.  I love you so much.

You can eat just one, can’t you?  Good.  I won’t tell.

What are you making your Mom for Valentine’s Day?  I would love to hear!

Comments are lovely, and I appreciate each one!

Four Dollar Fabulous Valentine Bouquet

I love flowers.  I love to grow them, and I love to give them.  I do not, however, enjoy forking out big bucks for a bouquet which consists mostly of carnations.  No thanks.

I recently created a bouquet for a certain young thespian who resides in our home.  (Congratulations, Lizzie, you nailed Lord #5).

This time of year, with nary a flower growing in my garden, I am forced to head to the supermarket and pick up a bit of color.

I found 5 stem tulip bouquets for $4.00 per bunch.  After coming home, I scouted around the yard to find greenery and interesting structural elements to add to the mix to create volume and texture.

I found of course fern, salal, rosemary, hemlock, ornamental grasses and bamboo.  Then I went about putting them together in a (hopefully) pleasing arrangement.

Once the bouquet was assembled, I went to work on making it pretty, and adding more color.  I used dollar store tissue and ribbon.

To whom shall I deliver this pretty bouquet?  There are a few ladies in my life who would probably love to receive a sweet bouquet on Valentine’s Day.  I made one for myself, and one to deliver.  Ya gotta love yourself first, right?

Me thinks I deserve some chocolate as well.

How about you?  Are you delivering any flowers this Valentine’s Day?  Are you treating yourself to anything special?

Stay Sweet!

Hey Cupid! Lit Up Arrow: DIY

I made this arrow especially for our Valentine’s Day Mantel.  And I LOVE IT! She may just make her way into my craft studio once the season of love departs.

The low- down:

Once cut out and sanded, I gave her a good slathering of Ruby Red interior house paint, which I had on hand.  (A few accent walls in my kitchen were once painted this color.)  It is a most lovely shade of red.

At this point it looked… OK.  But I could see all of the striations in the OSB.  It looked like an arrow cut out of OSB.  That’s not what I was going for.  I was looking for CUPID’S ARROW!

Brainstorm, brainstorm, brainstorm…

Of course!  What this lady needed was some flash!  Sparkle! Something thick to cover the OSB.

So I headed to Michael’s to purchase the only item that I did not have on hand, red glitter.  So again with the slathering on, but this time I coated her good with Mod Podge.  And then I dumped a generous amount of red glitter all over her.

And does she ever shine and sparkle!  Look out Cupid,  I have your arrow!

Lizzie says it makes our house look like the people that live here like to have fun.  I’m down with that.

What is the most whimsical holiday decor you have ever created?

Enjoy!

Woven Heart Valentine

These traditional Danish woven hearts are usually on the scene around Christmas time.  They adorned our tree this year, and I just fell in love with them.  Apparently, Scandinavian school children are taught to make them in Kindergarten.  Those little buggers must have pretty nimble fingers; as Lizzy and I found them a bit tricky.  But once we got the hang of it, we went to town, filling the tree.

Liz decided that they would make great Valentine Cards  filled with treats and personalized with ribbons, jokes… you name it.  I quite agree. Here is our stab at it:

I have included this

scandinavian heart

template.

Also, while these pictures are not a complete tutorial, I think they get you off to a good start.

You can also search for a tutorial on youtube.  I am not quite up to a vlog post yet!

These have been so much fun to make.  Enjoy.

Thanks for stopping by!

The Love Seat

We have this great love seat, it was a hand-me-down from my mom.  What began as a piece of furniture that provided “make-do” seating,  quickly became the seat that everyone fought for.  When guests come, they naturally gravitate toward it.  It is the perfect spot to drink tea and read a book.  Just deep enough for the smallest of us to curl up and nap in.

I started adding bits of whimsy to the old gal in an effort to dress her up and distract from the stains she has collected over the past 6 years here.  Not only does she provide a comfortable place to read but also to eat a quick snack or a plate of spaghetti.

So for the season of Love (Valentine’s and beyond) she will wear  a beautiful wedding ring quilt.  This quilt was made by my husband’s maternal great-grandmother.  Until recently, it adorned his grandmother’s bed.  Grandma passed away last fall.  Grandma herself was an amazing quilter.  We feel very fortunate to have this special quilt, passed down from generation to generation.

The quilt just says love to me, and so there she is providing the perfect *pop* to a few red ultra suede pillows cultivated from elsewhere in the house.

Happiest Love-season decorating  to you!  Enjoy your treasures, your home and those you love.

Thanks so very much for stopping by!

Valentine Heart Linzer Sandwich Cookies

I usually make these pretty almond linzer cookies in star shapes for Christmas.  They are so very pretty, and they taste even better than they look.

Not a single Christmas cookie was baked in my oven this year.  Can you believe that?  I know, that is like sacrilegious or something.   However, I knew that the holidays being what they were, there would be no shortage of homemade deliciousness in our home. Friends and family did not disappoint, we still had a never ending supply of cookies and candies on the kitchen counter.  But I felt that there was a little something missing…

When I found this heart shaped cookie cutter, I knew I had the opportunity to redeem myself.   They have officially kicked off the season of love on Wilbur Road.

This recipe is adapted from the one found on the cookie cutter packaging (Wilton).  You can use their recipe, however the one I have included omits cinnamon and replaces the vanilla extract with almond extract.  I think this creates a more distinct flavor.  Both are delicious.

In a bowl, combine:

2 Cups flour

2/3 Cup ground almonds

In a larger bowl, beat together until light and fluffy:

1 Cup butter

2/3 Cup granulated sugar

Once fluffy, mix in until well combined:

1 egg

1/2 tsp almond extract (you can use vanilla, however the addition of almond gives these cookies a more distinct almond-y flavor)

Add flour mixture to wet ingredients and mix by hand until combined.  Do not over mix.  Divide the dough in half, shaping into disks.  Wrap separately and refrigerate for at least 2 hours.

Once the dough is chilled, pre-heat your oven to 350 degrees.

You will now go about creating some really beautiful cookies.

Remove one of the dough disks from the fridge.  On a floured surface, roll dough to 1/8″ thick.  Go to town cutting out adorable shapes, both “whole” hearts and those with cut-outs.

Bake on a lightly greased or (preferably) parchment lined baking sheet, for 8-10 minutes.  Stay close, these babies can burn quickly.  They will be lightly browned, but just barely, when they are done.

Once completely cool, spread a thin layer of Raspberry Jam on the bottom (whole heart).

Now, I would like to tell you that your cookies are going to be as delicious as the ones that I am fortunate enough to bake, but the truth is, I have a secret ingredient.  The worlds best homemade Raspberry Jam.  It’s true.  I have to hide this stuff in the nether regions of the refrigerator (you know, in the veggie drawer).  It is a gift from a dear friend.  After countless praise, compliments and thanks for the gifts of jam every year, I have finally been invited to join the “jamming” party that she hosts every season.  Oh happy day. Make sure you come back this summer, just in case I get to share the recipe with you!

This cookie will be wonderful with any jam you can muster up, but if you can get your mittens on some that was made with love, please do that.  You can taste that love !

Back to the recipe!

Dust tops with powdered sugar.   Assemble, enjoy.  Maybe hide some for your sweetheart, so as the children do not eat them all.

Enjoy!
